The Yoga Alliance, the largest international yoga credentialing organization, announced sweeping updates to its teacher certification standards on Tuesday, the first major revision since 2016. The new requirements, which take effect January 2027, increase minimum training hours from 200 to 300 and add mandatory coursework in anatomy, mental health awareness, and inclusive teaching practices.

The changes come after years of criticism that the 200-hour standard was insufficient to prepare teachers for the physical and emotional complexities of modern yoga instruction. Under the new framework, aspiring teachers must complete at least 50 hours of anatomy and physiology training and 25 hours focused on teaching students with injuries, disabilities, and mental health conditions.

Existing 200-hour certified teachers will not lose their credentials but will be encouraged to pursue bridge programs to meet the new standards. Major yoga teacher training programs, including those at YogaWorks and CorePower Yoga, have already announced plans to update their curricula ahead of the January deadline.
