Hoka's fourth-generation Tecton X4 continues to push the boundaries of carbon-plated trail running shoes, delivering noticeably faster performance on technical terrain while improving grip and durability over its predecessor.
Performance Testing
We tested the Tecton X4 over 120 miles across rocky desert trails, muddy forest singletrack, and steep mountain routes.
- Weight: 9.2 oz (men's size 10) — 0.4 oz lighter than Tecton X3
- Dual carbon fiber plates embedded in PEBA foam midsole
- Vibram Megagrip outsole with deeper 5mm lugs for improved mud and rock traction
- Heel-toe drop: 5mm, ideal for technical descending
- Fit runs true to size with improved toe box width
The Verdict
The Tecton X4 is the fastest trail shoe we've tested, making it ideal for trail races from 10K to 50K on non-extreme terrain. The carbon plate provides measurable energy return on climbs and flats. For ultra distances beyond 50K or extremely rocky terrain, the cushioning may be insufficient — look at the Hoka Speedgoat instead. At $225, it's premium-priced but delivers race-day performance that justifies the investment for competitive trail runners.
