A comprehensive meta-analysis published in the Journal of Sports Nutrition has cast doubt on the widely held belief that branched-chain amino acid supplements significantly enhance muscle recovery. The review examined 34 randomized controlled trials and found that BCAAs provided no meaningful benefit over a complete protein source for reducing muscle soreness or accelerating recovery.

Researchers concluded that individuals consuming adequate dietary protein, roughly 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight daily, are unlikely to see additional recovery benefits from standalone BCAA supplementation. The findings suggest that whole-food protein sources and complete protein powders remain the most effective recovery tools.
